9 Prototypes

This project developed prototypes for different locations to demonstrate how the transition could be accomplished in urban, rural and highway locations across the state. Each of these prototypes have very distinct conditions including local community, access, mobility issues, frequency of visits, types of customers, etc.

The prototypes are focused on the adaptive reuse of existing buildings rather than entirely new buildings to reduce the carbon footprint of the projects. This approach engages the past and present in a way that enriches the layered environment and provides continuity for local communities.

Urban: This prototype covers urban and suburban locations with dense populations and smaller stations. These stations are often clustered in high traffic areas on prominent street corners. In the transition, the number of stations that are close to each other may force some of these to close with a shortage of customers. What should we propose for these sites in the future? Three locations will be examined:

Bronx, New York

Buffalo, New York

Levittown, New York

Rural: In rural locations, this prototype has smaller population density and limited access to public transportation. Some of the the sites have more space available for the intended elements or expansion. Gas stations are further apart in rural locations, and they may need to provide both gasoline service in addition to EV charging for some time. There are three locations studied here:

Windham, New York

Port Henry, New York

Watkins Glen, New York

Highway: A prototype is needed to cover locations along interstate highways that are remote from urban areas or have direct access only from the highway. Trucks and cars are accommodated in the same location often with a convenience store along with a restaurant. The prototypes include a New York State Thruway site, a Parkway site and an interstate highway site.

Le Roy, New York - New York State Thruway Ontario Location

Tappan, New York - Palisades Interstate Parkway

Binghamton, New York - Interstate Highway
